Comparison Photos of Melody, Addy, & Cecile Dolls

A few days ago, we posted our review of the newest 1960s Beforever character Melody Ellison doll. (You can click here to view it.) Today we are sharing some comparison photos between the new 1960s Beforever Melody doll with Addy and Cecile, both also from the Beforever line.

Comparison of Melody, Addy, and Cecile:

First taking a look at these two dolls, both Melody and Cecile have the Sonali face mold.

Melody's eyes are pinwheel brown while Cecile has hazel eyes. Melody also has bangs while Cecile does not.

Technically speaking, they both have the dark vinyl coloring, though between these two specific dolls I am photographing, Melody's coloring seems a tag lighter and more "golden" in undertones. I want to say this is due to batch variations or subtle tweaks to the "dark" vinyl coloring over time, but it's hard to tell without an army of Melody and Cecile dolls to compare. :D

Melody's hair is short and flat ironed straight while Cecile's hair is in curls. Both have textured hair, but due to the curls, Cecile's hair looks and feels very different from Melody's. In terms of styling, I personally feel that Melody has more options with her hair.

Next, looking at Melody and Addy, these two dolls have different face molds complete, Melody with the Sonali mold and Addy with her own Addy face mold. The Addy doll also comes with "perma-attached" gold hoop earrings.

The both have pinwheel brown eyes.

They both have what AG classifies as "dark" vinyl coloring. However, Addy's dark vinyl coloring is unique among the AG dolls in that it is slightly darker with a pinkish undertone relative to the standard "dark" vinyl which has golden undertones.

Both dolls have textured hair, though Addy's hair is significantly longer (past her bottom) when it is down. Texture wise, Addy's hair feels more textured compared to Melody's hair, but it is not a huge difference, just enough to be noticeable when feeling the two wigs.

And finally as an extra, here is Melody next to the Truly Me #49 doll to show the difference between the dark vinyl Melody and the medium vinyl TM #49. 

Here is Cecile modeling Melody's meet outfit.

And sweet Addy modeling the outfit. ^_^ I think both of them look lovely in the clothes, and the colors really work with dolls with dark vinyl coloring, but I have to admit, I am partial to Melody in the outfit best still, due to her hair style being so suited for the time period.

I still have several photos of Melody in various outfits with different hairstyles just out and about I need to watermark and post in the next day or two, because I've had quite a few questions on the versatility of her wig. 1960s Beforever Melody Ellison Doll Review

We are super fortunate that a fellow AG collector and good friend is visiting with her Melody doll and gave us permission to photograph and review her doll for L&L! Melody Ellison is the newest Beforever historical character from the 1960s. Her 3 books are already available, though the doll and her collection are rumored to be released in August. I know people are curious but please refrain from asking me where the doll is from, as I was asked specifically to not post that. 

It's been several months now since we first heard of Melody, and I know some of the fervor has died down a bit, but I hope seeing these photos will get some of you excited again. ^_^ I want to stress that regardless of what these photos show, nothing is set in stone until AG officially releases her so please take this review with a grain of salt.

Melody Ellison Doll Review:

Her hair comes in a black hairnet and a blue hair ribbon is part of her meet outfit.

Melody has the Sonali face mold (same as the Beforever historical character Cecile). She has the dark vinyl coloring (also same as Cecile) and brown pinwheel eyes. 

Her arms have the protective plastic sleeves AG has been releasing with their newer dolls to protect the arms from shine marks.

She comes with ribbed socks and teal flats with bows.

The hair tag that comes with her says straight hair.

Her bangs are a nice thin layer (similar thickness to Girl of the Year 2015 Grace's side bangs).

The bangs have a slight curl to them, though they got a little flattened in the box it seems.

Her hair is a little poofy straight out of the hair net. 

Her bangs look a little uneven but this is because I hadn't had time to fluff them out yet. Later pictures will show that they are straight and even. 

Melody does have textured hair (like the Beforever historical character Addy) and it is so soft and voluminous! 

It is a little longer than shoulder length and offers a lot more styling options than Kit's short bob, while still being really easy to untangle and keep in good condition with the basic AG wire wig brush.

Now let's take a closer look at Melody! ^_^

You can see now that I've gotten her out of the wind and fixed her hair, her bangs are even. They are partially hiding her eyebrows but they are feathered eyebrows like all the new dolls. 

We've already seen her meet dress a few times from when it first leaked. The bow can be removed with a seam ripper (not so easily snipped, it's held on by an actual seam instead of just one stitch) but I do like how the bow looks on the dress. 

The width of the bow headband is about the same as the bow on her dress.

Her socks are mid calf length, ribbed, and white. Her shoes are teal flats with bow decorations.

You can see how thick Melody's hair is and how it lays really nicely. There is a little big of a flip at the end of her hair. It looks like it's layered here, but her hair is not actually layered (it just looks that way due to the headband holding back some hair).

There is a little triangle "pleat" detail that's subtle but really makes the dress look cuter overall. ^_^

*Note: This Melody has neck strings, though I must reemphasize that the actual Melody might have the hidden zip ties like Lea. Nothing is set in stone until AG official releases her.*

You can see it is textured. I played with it for quite a while and speaking as someone that really struggles with styling doll hair, Meldoy's hair is wonderfully easy to handle. The textured hair is soft and silky, and hold styles really easily. Brushing it back straight is also super simple by just using the regular AG wire wig hairbrush. Please don't let this gorgeous wig intimidate you! It's so easy to handle for small hands, large hands, uncoordinated fingers, you name it! 

I love that the collar does go all the way around to the back of the dress, since it feels like on so many of the modern AG outfits, the collars all seem to stop at the shoulders. The dress has a velcro closure. The houndstooth fabric is well woven and thick, good quality, especially relative to many of AG's recent offerings and I am impressed with the weight of the fabric.

Hahaha and of course... what we all have been dying to know... What color are Melody's undies?

White!

It seems like we saw all of her meet outfit except her underthings so I was curious, but it looks like her undies are similar to Maryellen's. Also, like AG's recent trend with their new dolls, Melody also has plastic wrap around her thighs for protection against sign marks.

Her ribbon bow headband is actually one piece, with elastic in the back. 

One last picture of that gorgeous wig! *swoon swoon swoon* I styled the bangs a little differently here and brushed her hair forward, and voila! A new look! <3 I am such a sucker for thick, beautiful doll wigs and Melody's wig has really just won me over (just in case it wasn't already obvious). ^_^ Relative to my other dolls, when I brushed her hair, she didn't loose many hairs and the ends were still even after an afternoon of brushing.

What do you all think of Miss Melody? Is your heart beating quicker? Your wallet feeling lighter? :D I cannot recommend her enough, especially after reading her books, which I really suggest you all try to do before her official debut! Her character is strong and sensitive, and her doll is so sweet and beautiful, with a versatile look. The one I reviewed seems to have an exceptionally gentle look and it will take all my willpower to return her but I can't wait to pick out my own Melody to join the L&L household later this summer!

Review & Comparison for Girl of the Year 2016 Lea Clark

I took the plunge and purchased the Girl of the Year for 2016, Lea Clark. My review is below and consists mainly of a photo bombardment of everything I could think of. ^_^

She has the new purple Girl of the Year boxes that started last year with Grace. Her name is printed on the front lid.

There is also a sticker on the bottom, similar to Grace. There seems to be a new "Warning" sticker style now, with the message printed in 3 languages: English, French, and Spanish. I'm assuming this is because AG is now selling in Mexico and Canada as well.

Ta-da! With the lid taken off! ^_^ Be blinded by the bright, tropical colors of life!

This is just a small note but I believe the lids of the boxes have been changed as well. They now have this white, folded over flap on the side which wasn't there before. Not a big deal by any means, just something I noticed. :)

Once you lift up the meet book, you can see the secret compartment underneath where her messenger bag and compass necklace are hidden.

The yellow "V"s on the strap are embroidered. A very nice detail!

The symbol is a decal and the yellow loops on the pink straps are plastic.

Ego tag! Otherwise it's plain. There is not additional pocket/holding space on the back side.

The bag closes with velcro squares.

Inside of the bag is simple with just one compartment half full with ego tag.

The strap of the necklace is adjustable so you can put it on the doll and adjust the length. This is the "long" length necklace.

And this is the "short" length.

The arrow moves but it's not an actual, working compass. The arrow's tushy end is just heavier than the head so I guess you could say the arrow always points away from gravity. XD

Onward to the doll packaging!

The feet have the styrofoam wrapped around the ankles so the rubberband holding the legs in place won't make marks on the vinyl. There is a sheet of plastic behind the feet, to help protect against shine marks from the vinyl rubbing against the cardboard box.

It seems like moving forward, AG is now wrapping their doll arms in plastic gloves as well to also protect them from shine marks. And as an added measure of protection, there's also plastic on the sides of the boxes where the hands would hit the box. I guess They're getting a lot of returns from disgruntled consumers about opening up a "new" doll to find it covered in shine marks.

The neck is held in the same way as always, with an easy to remove white elastic around a styrofoam wrapped neck. 

I opted to have my Lea's ears pierced while I was at the store. The doll does not come with pierced ears and earrings unless you request and pay for it.

Lea... Deboxed!

Apparently AG considers her hair straight, but it is definitely wavy-borderline curly, so sometimes a quick finger curl/brush works better than the regular wig brush.

I was able to slip the plastic arm gloves off fairly easily without cutting it, but this could vary from doll to doll. 

When I got her ears pierced at the store, I choose the special Lea Clark earrings that are only available for her. They gave a new, unopened pack of the 3 earrings that come in the set, and then pierced her ears with an additional set of the circular symbol studs. So basically I ended up with 2 sets of the circular symbol studs. 

Now let's look at the doll at her meet outfit.

I was surprised to see these shoes used velcro (it didn't seem like it would need it), but there you go! ^_^

The left shoe is imprinted with a product code on the bottom.

1) Ego tag!

2) Belt does not go all the way around to the back and is permanently attached to the sides.

3) Mismatched prints galore! I can't really fault them though, the skirt does look like it would be too cost consuming to match it up, especially in a mass produced, factory setting. That doesn't mean I like it though. XD

Luckily, the prints on the back at least match up! It's just the back and front don't. So no side view photos of you doll in this outfit, unless they're rebels!. :D

Lea does not have neck strings. Her head is held on with a zip tie, and the seam is sewn completely up. I'm not a fan of this, because I frequently take off my doll's head to readjust the stuffing to fix head tilts. Also, this will make customizing a lot more work. For someone who has the tools and knowledge, it would not be too difficult to put their own neck strings in. However, I'm not one of those people so... Boo stringless necks! >_<

The shoulder straps are braided yellow cord and can slide around in the loop holding them to the front of the dress. 

Her underwear will blind you from the front!

Another new thing AG is doing is putting these plastic protectors around the leg joints. I'm not sure what protective purpose these serve though, as this is not an area prone to shine marks (since it's protected by the clothes), and it can't be stains since AG uses colorfast clothing. :/

And the back!

I kind of miss the cute little graphic that always used to be on the GOTY underwear (I think they stopped with Saige), but at least it's one less secret symbol. :D

To my eyes, her hair looks blond. However, I concede Lea has the type of hair coloring that people will debate on over whether it is blond or brown. A lot of it depends on lighting and personal perceptions. 

Above, the two images show that with greater exposure and more light, it appears more blond, and with less exposure and less light, it will look more brown.

Now we can move on to the doll herself!

Although each individual aspect of her look (Josefina mold, hazel eyes, wavy blond/brown hair, medium vinyl) are not unique, I really like the combination together and think Lea is a beautiful doll. 

I'm probably most impressed by her wig. It is wavy and layered, but it goes down to her butt and feel so soft and silky. I've brushed it multiple times now and it still feels soft and easy to handle despite the length. Depending on how you pull back the hair and curl it, you can give her a completely different look which is really nice. 

Here is a close up her eyes. They're a light, yellow hazel color, which is more or less just another variation on the tried and tired hazel coloring. -_-

This is what her hair looks like fresh out of the hair net. It is longer and more straight once it has been brushed out. Gloriously thick and not bad at all to style!

Her hair has blond highlights, which are most easily seen near her hair part. :)

All 3 dolls have the side left side part, though I would say Lea's is the least wavy/curly out of them. They also all have hazel eyes, but Lea's are a lighter, more yellow hazel. Lea also has the arched eyebrows that are new.

So just as a note, this was taken right after taking both Lea & Kanani's hair right out of the hairnet. Once both their hair had been brushed and relaxed a bit, lea's was down to her cloth butt and Kanani's was between mid-thigh/knee length, and more curly that Lea's.

Lea's hair also feels softer and easier to maintain than Kanani's, which felt more dry in comparison despite also being new out of hair net.

Lea's hair is the lightest of all 3 of the dolls.

Many people say Rebecca and Lea look alike for them. I personally don't feel like they are very similar but I can understand those who do say so. For me, the difference in hair coloring and length, as well as the vinyl coloring and the fact they come from 2 different lines enough for me to keep them apart in my mind. 

You can see how Lea's eyes are lighter than Rebecca's as well.

I would say Lea's coloring is a little lighter and more "yellow" than Kanani's medium vinyl 5 years ago. Most likely this is due to a batch variance and not intentional on AG's part (though the medium vinyl coloring has been getting lighter through the years). 

Her lip coloring also seems to be darker than the other dolls though this is only obvious when compared next to them.

Overall, while I don't find Lea terribly unique, I think her coloring combination does make her quite lovely. For me, she looks much older than the other dolls, due to the arched eyebrows giving her a "plucked" look in my eyes, as well as the stylized "beach blowout" hair. 

I haven't decided yet if I will keep her, so I'll probably end up doing a Dress Up Gallery for her the way I did for Maryellen to help me make up my mind, but right now I'm leaning towards keeping her. I *love* the feel of her wig, but I would want to swap out her eye colors and the zip tie is a big hindrance for me.
